3 Ways to Use Pantone's 2017 Color of the Year

Every year Pantone and the big name paint companies like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams announce what their Color of the Year is going to be.  You might say "why does this matter to me?"  Fair question...Pantone began in the early 60's as a way to standardize colors in the graphic design industry.  They are now known worldwide as the "standard language for accurate color communication" in fashion, home, architecture, graphic design and paint.  It's only been in recent years that they have chosen a Color of the Year.  Last year, they actually picked two; Serenity, a light blue and Rose Quartz, a light pink.  Guess what?  We are seeing that light dusty pink and different shades of blue in everything from fashion to home décor everywhere. The color for 2017 is a complete departure from the soft hues of last year. This years color...drumroll please...is called Greenery.

Renew... Refresh... Revive

A yellow-green is meant to remind us of that new green when leaves first unfurl in the Spring.  Pantone uses all the "Re" words when they describe this color.  Rejuvenate...Revitalize. They are thinking to take it back to nature and the natural freedom this brings to mind. It will take a little while to trickle down but it will and you will be seeing this color pop up in magazines and stores.  It's already hit the fashion runways.

What does this mean to you?

Should you run out and buy all new stuff...Heck no!  I don't know about you but I can't afford to do that.  So if it's a color you like and want to incorporate it, how do you do this?  I would start with adding one or two things into what you already have. This green will play nice with lots of colors you may already have like grays, whites and some beiges.  It will pop with navy, coral and a wide range of pinks and black.

So here are just three suggestions for bringing this new color into your world...

#1.  Plants

This is the easiest and most natural one of all.  Real or faux.  It will add a living beauty and the faux ones have come such a long way it's hard to tell sometimes that they're not real, but do buy the ones that look real!

#2 Pillows and Throws

I have a serious pillow addiction...maybe you do too.  We might need to seek help!  I literally have gone to buying pillow covers because I can hardly shut the closet door for all the pillows trying to escape.  There is a reason for my problem and that is this...pillows are one of the easiest ways to change up the look of your room without going broke.  Incorporate some of this fresh green with a couple of pillows and a throw and you will be ready for Spring and beyond.

While I might not paint all four walls in a room with this color, an accent wall could be your ticket to a whole new look.  A piece of existing furniture with new knobs might be the thing that takes your room to fabulous.   Spray paint something or a couple of something's that you already own to add that pop.  The best thing about spray paint is when you want to break up with this color, another color is just a spray can away.

So if this color speaks to you and you're ready to add a little pop to your life, these three P's...

Plants, Pillows and Paint

might just be your ticket to renew, refresh and rejuvenate!
